"They should have pulled away, one or both of them, but neither did, and every tick of the clock as they stood and stared at each other, hand to hand, was a hammer blow that nailed the unspoken thing irrevocably into place between them."
- KJ Charles, A Gentleman's Position (Society of Gentlemen, Book 3)
I'm not a great artist, but it's an instinct of mine to present fanart to an author out of undiluted enthusiasm for their work. I don't always draw fanart for things I love, but there are some images that stick in my head until I put them down in a sketch to the best of my ability.
So here is my best effort at drawing David Cyprian and Lord Richard Vane. A Gentleman's Position captured my heart because of the confluence of Shit I Like in one excellent book, and because KJ Charles is an astounding wordsmith, and because it is a love story for the ages. Cyprian is just a fantastic character, and goes into the annals of Most Awesome Confidential Servants*, tied for first with John Childermass (of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell). I'd love to see some kind of crossover between Charles and Clarke wherein Cyprian and Childermass quietly and secretly take over England.
I did my best in terms of researching style, but good goddamn, Regency-era fashion is complicated. I took a guess at Lord Richard's hairstyle and I could be 1000 miles off base, but I went for floofiness because that seems to have been what hair was like back then. I also know that his cousin Harry rocks the Titus and Lord Richard did not seem super enthusiastic about it, so I figured he would probably not go that route.
The space between David and Lord Richard and their hand positioning didn't quite match up to the book, but I ran out of room and was forced to improvise.
Many thanks to KJ Charles for being such a good writer, and for writing so many good books.
*Nota bene, Merrick from Charles' Charm of Magpies series also ranks highly in this category.
